As you probably already know, we’re passionate about our
tech, and nothing gets our juices flowing quite like having a new piece of kit
to play with. This month our favourite new toy is the ScanSnap SV600 from
Fujitsu. Not only is it compact and clever, but it has the potential to make
life a whole lot easier for some of our favourite people – teachers and
students.
The document scanner has to be one of the most useful
business and educational tools of the last century, allowing for the quick and
efficient replication of files in volume and at low cost. However, flatbeds
have their limitations, particularly when it comes to digitising data from
sources other than single paper sheets – and let’s face it, when you’re
preparing lessons for students, the number of times you find yourself sourcing
from single paper sheets are few. Consequently, edges can become warped or
blurred, vital information can be missed, and presentation – the importance of
which you may well spend hours drumming into your pupils – is ultimately
shoddy. The Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600 is arguably one of the easiest – and best
quality – ways to combat those problems.
To avoid any disruption to the workspace, the SV600 has
been specifically designed to securely sit above any surface you wish to scan
on – documents, books, student’s art projects, portfolios, A3 files, or even
(small but interesting) architectural features – the SV600 employs a deep depth
of field lens to accurately capture the data before it. A high directivity LED
lamp allows the machine to maintain the same level of light throughout the scannable
area, which ensures enhanced auto-focus for improved quality, regardless of the
surrounding light conditions.
While the Fujitsu hardware is impressive, the bundled
software delivers equally remarkable results; flattening pages; seamlessly
combining separately scanned zones to create a superbly smooth finish;
correcting image distortion; and saving in a range of formats to suit your
requirements, including book creation and the separation of multiple documents.
The potential for both teachers and students is phenomenal.
We absolutely love this device and can see it being
tremendously beneficial in a wide range of environments, however, it’s schools,
colleges and universities where the ScanSnap could be invaluable: for the
distribution of information where text books – and school bag space – are
limited; for the creation of projects and course work; for record-keeping, and
the salvaging of damaged data; for any number of other uses that we’ve yet to
think of!
Smart, compact, easy to use – what’s not to love?
